No one wants to trawl through the start menu every time the volume needs changing - that's why it's necessary to keep the volume icon visible in the system tray at all times.

The Knowhow

There are two ways to place the volume symbol back onto your taskbar/system tray:

Option 1

  • Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar and click Properties (as shown below):

  • A new pop-up window will appear, click on the Customize... button
  • In the next window, find Volume and under the Behavior column chose Always show
  • Click OK and then Apply

Option 2

Windows Vista and 7

  • Click Start > Control Panel
  • The Control Panel window will appear; in the search bar in the top right type taskbar
  • When the search results are loaded, click on Customize icons on the taskbar
  • A pop-up window will show. Click on the Notification Area tab and under 'System icons' place a tick next to Volume.
  • Click Apply and then OK

Windows XP

  • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
  • Double-click on Sounds and Audio Devices
  • Place a tick next to 'Place volume icon in the taskbar'
  • Click Apply and then OK
  • If it's still not showing, do the steps in Option 1
