The Knowhow
There are two ways to place the volume symbol back onto your taskbar/system tray:
Option 1

Right-click on an empty space on the taskbar and click Properties (as shown below):
- A new pop-up window will appear, click on the Customize... button
- In the next window, find Volume and under the Behavior column chose Always show
- Click OK and then Apply
Option 2
Windows Vista and 7
- Click Start > Control Panel
- The Control Panel window will appear; in the search bar in the top right type taskbar
- When the search results are loaded, click on Customize icons on the taskbar
- A pop-up window will show. Click on the Notification Area tab and under 'System icons' place a tick next to Volume.
- Click Apply and then OK
Windows XP
- Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
- Double-click on Sounds and Audio Devices
- Place a tick next to 'Place volume icon in the taskbar'
- Click Apply and then OK
- If it's still not showing, do the steps in Option 1
