While every make and model of printer has its own unique features, there are a number of common settings used in Windows 7. These simplify the printing process, meaning no matter what the computer you're using is connected to you'll always be able to get the results you want. Our guide gives you all the hard copy you need.

Printer Settings

The Knowhow

Setting up Printing Preferences:

You can alter the default printing options for each individual printer connected to your computer. This will mean each printout you want is automatically adjusted to the settings.

  • Click Start
  • Select Devices and Printers

You'll now see a full list of all printers connected to your computer

  • Right-click on the printer you want to set up
  • Select Printing Preferences

You can now adjust a number of options for that printer. Depending on the capabilities of the printer you may be able to set up additional features.

Common options include:

Page Layout - whether the page is printed in landscape or portrait format
Paper Size - Choose the option for the paper you most commonly load, such as A4
Paper source - Useful if your printer has multiple trays; you can load one with A4 and another with a different size
Double Sided Printing - sometimes called "Duplex". You can set this as the default option if your printer is compatible
Print colour - If you have a colour printer, you can choose whether your printer defaults to colour or black and white

Some of the options will only be available through the Advanced option on the layout tab.

Once you have adjusted the settings, click Apply then OK. Everything is now set up and ready to go.
