The Knowhow
How secure or safe is Knowhow™ Cloud?
Each Knowhow™ Cloud account is backed up to multiple storage units - keeping your data protected is of paramount importance.
Our network is protected by enterprise-grade firewalls. These firewalls restrict access to your data, so that only your friends, family and business colleagues can gain access.
Files stored on our servers are encrypted using military grade, AES-256 encryption, so in the (highly unlikely) event that our storage facilities are compromised, any stolen files would be meaningless.
We take care of the encryption process (when you first backup files), so you don't have to worry about it.
Because we handle the encryption, you don't have to fiddle around with settings in the Desktop Software. You can also view your files and folders straight away (without un-encrypting them first).
There is a separate encryption tool available to you. This tool carries out an encryption between the Desktop Software and our servers. It's an additional level of protection, and it's up to you whether or not you use it. It works in a similar way to the encryption used for online bank accounts.
We even have strict processes in place to ensure that the Knowhow™ and Livedrive teams cannot access customer data. Data stored on Knowhow™ Cloud is absolutely private, and cannot be accessed by staff.
Cloud data can only be accessed by the user, unless it is shared publicly (i.e. for sharing holiday photos) in which case it is visible to your invitees through the sharing portal.
If a customer violates copyright regulations, i.e. by making public data that they do not own, we reserve the right to close the user's cloud account.
Back to topHow do I run an integrity check?
An integrity check verifies the status of your Knowhow™ Cloud account.
To run an integrity check:
- Open your Knowhow™ Cloud Control Panel
- Go to the Advanced tab
- Select Maintenance
- Click Run
Please note: the integrity check may take some time to complete. If, for whatever reason, the check is interrupted, you may need to begin the process from scratch.
Back to topHow do I password-protect my Desktop Software?
Your cloud account has a password-protected login. The Desktop software only runs on your computer after a successful login.
If you wish to add additional passwords, you may choose to open up a Business account.
- Business accounts work by giving different users different levels of access
- A main administrator decides which users get permission to which files
- Those given permission are given their own personal Backup & Briefcase areas
- Users can also share folders between teams
How do I enable encryption?
- Open the Knowhow™ Cloud control panel
- Go to the Bandwidth tab
- Tick the box marked Encrypt all file transfers between Livedrive and your PC
Integrity Check problems
If you experience problems with the Integrity Check tool (i.e. failure to complete / failure to launch), check that you have the very latest version of our software. Software updates can be downloaded from your web portal.
Still having trouble? Our development team are working around the clock to be resolve software niggles, and any technical glitches are swiftly resolved.
Back to topHow can I remove an old computer?
When you remove your old computer, your cloud software will stop working on the original machine (for security reasons). It will start working on your new computer once you have installed the software on your new machine. To do this:
- Go to the Web Portal
- Go to Account Settings
- Go to Computers
- Find your computer name
- Look for the Last Seen field (this shows when your computer last communicated with our servers)
- Click the Remove link next to the computer you wish to remove
NB: this operation does not remove the backup settings.
