We can’t over-emphasise the importance of backing up your data! Even when it comes to a games console, it’s worth keeping a copy of anything important just in case. Think how annoying it would be if you lost your save games - especially if you’ve spent far too many hours battling through Demon’s Souls or completing every last quest in Fallout 3.

Sony have made it easy to back up your PS3 hard disk. This is especially useful if you’re thinking of upgrading the drive to a larger version. Here’s a simple guide to keeping all your Playstation data safe and secure.

The Knowhow

You will need a USB storage device, such as a memory stick or external hard drive, to create your backup. This will need enough free space to hold everything you want to copy.

  • USB hard drives need to be formatted using the FAT32 system for the PS3 to recognise them

Using the Backup Utility:

  • Connect your USB storage device to the PS3
  • Turn on the PS3
  • Navigate to the Settings menu and select System Settings
  • Choose Backup Utility
  • Select Back Up

The system will then copy the data to your storage device.

Restoring your backed-up data:

  • Using the steps above, navigate to the Backup Utility menu
  • Select Restore

Your data will now be copied from the storage device to your PS3.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific details.
