Our iPods are brilliant most of the time, but there are rare occasions when they have a funny turn. Whether they won’t sync or just lock up, it’s really frustrating. Let’s face it - a frozen iPod is about as useful as a lolly for playing music, and not half as likely to cool you down. If iPod errors are taking you to boiling point, chill out with these solutions that should be music to your ears.

The Knowhow

Frozen iPods:

Hard resetting your device can often get it working again. There are different ways of doing this depending on the model:

iPod Touch:

  • Hold down the Sleep/Wake button on the top right of the iPod and the round "home" button under the screen
  • Keep the buttons held down until the device restarts

iPod Shuffle:

  • Turn the device off
  • Leave the iPod off for at least ten seconds before turning on again

iPod Nano:

  • Hold down the Sleep/Wake and volume down buttons
  • Keep them held down until the device restarts

iPods with click wheels:

  • Turn the "hold" button on and off once
  • Press and hold the Menu and Select (centre) buttons
  • Keep these held down until the system restarts

Restoring the Firmware:

If you experience freezes on a regular basis, the software on your iPod may have become corrupted. Restore it using the following steps:

  • Load iTunes
  • Connect your iPod to your computer
  • Select your iPod in iTunes and select Check for Updates
  • If there is an update, let the system install it
  • If not, click Restore
  • Choose Restore and Update
  • Follow the on-screen instructions
  • Do not disconnect your iPod until the process is complete. This may take some time.

This will solve the majority of iPod issues.
