Electricity and water aren’t the best of friends, so it’s perfectly natural to be a little sceptical of something that calls itself a shower radio. Even more suspicious are devices that say you can use them while swimming. Is it really possible you can listen to the airwaves without the water being a breaker?

The truth is there are many types of radio designed to be used in and around water. This doesn’t mean that all radios that call themselves waterproof are suitable for use while exploring coral reefs, for example, and there are a number of things to take into consideration when using these devices. Our guide will give you all the information you need before taking the plunge.

The Knowhow

Shower radios:

  • The majority of shower radios are splashproof rather than waterproof
  • Excessive moisture may affect or damage the device
  • These devices may be designed for use outside the shower cubicle
  • Floating bath radios are waterproof but not designed to be submerged

Water pressure powered radios:

  • These devices connect to your shower and are powered by water passing through them
  • These are designed to resist water and remain in the shower cubicle
  • Cannot be used in other locations as have to be installed onto a shower to work

Waterproof Swimming MP3 player radios:

  • Designed for use underwater to limited depths
  • May be useable in the sea as well as swimming pools; this will vary by model
  • More suitable for surface and lap swimming than diving
  • Needs additional waterproof swimming headphones

Waterproof indoor / outdoor radios:

  • Often designed to resist water rather than be 100% waterproof
  • Suitable for use outdoors in some wet weather conditions
  • Should not be submerged in water
  • May not be resistant to salt water, depending on model

Bathroom / Wetroom systems:

  • Systems need to be permanently installed and mounted in room
  • Can be waterproofed for a variety of wet environments; e.g. showers, steam rooms, bathrooms
  • Not designed to be mounted underwater
  • Full system and installation can be expensive

Waterproof cases:

  • Cases are available for a wide range of portable radios and media devices
  • Some models only offer splash protection; check the user manual
  • Fully waterproof cases allow the device to be used underwater to a limited depth while swimming
  • Can offer waterproofing against seawater; The user manual will let you know if your model offers this
  • Needs to be used with waterproof headphones

Technology advances all the time, and waterproof solutions for listening to music get better and better. Whether you’re singing in the shower or enjoying a life on the ocean waves, there’s a radio for you.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific details.
