The two most common printers used in the household are inkjet and laser. Inkjet are the most popular for home use; they use ink cartridges and are good for printing colour documents like photos. Laser printers can print out large files quickly and to high quality; they use toners which are more expensive than ink cartirdges.
Both toners and cartridges need to be replaced when they run out.
How to get more from your printer
By printing your documents in lower quality print settings such as draft.
Software varies on each computer but for many this can be done by clicking on Print > Properties > Print Quality, where you click the draft option.
By printing webpages and other documents in black and white, rather than colour.
Click Print > Properties then select Black and White
By checking cartridges which aren’t printing rather than replacing immediately.
Take out cartridge and wipe the bottom where the ink comes out firmly with a damp paper towel to unclog the nozzle which will help ink flow more freely.
By using cartridge as long as possible.
Keep using the cartridge even when you get a warning saying the ink is low rather than changing immediately as you could get 100’s more pages out of it.
Think about fonts
Use fonts that aren’t thick and avoid big bold letters in the text if you can. If you need to use a larger point size use a grey font instead of black or a colour.
There are just a few tips to get more from your printer which are good for the environment and will also save you spending money like it’s paper.
Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific details.
