Everyone we know who gets an iPad/iPod instantly undergoes a transformation. They sit there, noses buried in their mobile, mumbling something about Tiny Wings and a new App they’ve got that swaps people’s faces.

We’d call them iBores, but secretly we’re a little jealous. Let’s face it - some of those applications and games are pretty impressive and Angry Birds is a lot of fun. In fact, many apps are downright useful, letting you shop, surf the net and check your social networking sites no matter where you are.

Is it only iPod/iPad users who get to have all the fun? Can programs from the Apple App Store work on any other smartphones? We’ve got bad news and good news for you...

The Knowhow

  • Items bought from the Apple App store only work on Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

Other smartphones:

Other smartphones may be able to access other App stores

  • Windows phones have a dedicated app store called Marketplace
  • You are also able to play certain Xbox Live games on Windows Phones
  • Android phones can access an official app store called Android Market
  • Other stores exist such as BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi
  • Many apps are available on different types of smartphone. For example, Fruit Ninja is available for iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android and Windows phones and certain Nokia devices

Most smartphones have access to an app store; your service provider will be able to give you information on what is available and how to connect. Downloading these little programs can be as addictive as the apps themselves, so have fun testing them out.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific details.
